Raw denim refers to denim fabric or jeans that have not been washed after weaving and sewing. It often retains sizing on the yarns, giving the fabric a stiff hand feel, a crisp surface, and a deep indigo appearance.
For brands, raw denim is not just a dark version of denim. It is a starting point that leaves the first shrinkage, creasing, and fading experience to the wearer.
Key Features
Sizing Remains
During weaving, sizing is applied to the warp yarns to reduce breakage and help them pass through the loom. In raw denim, much of this sizing remains, giving the fabric its characteristic stiffness and structure.
This stiffness helps create sharp creases during wear. Over time, those creases can become defined fade patterns such as whiskers, honeycombs, and abrasion marks.
Shrinkage Must Be Considered
Raw denim may shrink after the first wash, especially if the fabric is unsanforized. Sanforized raw denim usually has more controlled shrinkage, while unsanforized denim can shrink much more significantly.
For this reason, shrinkage testing is essential before finalizing patterns, grading, and care instructions.
Deep Indigo Color
Because the fabric has not been washed, raw denim usually shows the deepest indigo shade at the point of delivery. The surface indigo has not yet been removed by washing or finishing.
This makes raw denim the clearest starting point for long-term fading and personal aging.
Practical Points for Brands
- Check vertical and horizontal shrinkage before finalizing patterns
- Test crocking, as raw indigo can transfer to lighter fabrics, shoes, bags, or furniture
- Clarify whether the fabric is sanforized or unsanforized
- Prepare clear care instructions for retail customers
- Consider offering a one-wash option when size stability and comfort are important
Raw Denim vs One-Wash
Raw denim offers the most direct aging experience, but it requires more understanding from the wearer. One-wash denim removes some sizing, stabilizes shrinkage, and makes the garment easier to wear from the beginning.
Neither option is superior in every case. The right choice depends on the brand’s customer, fit concept, fading expectations, and retail communication.
ALLBLUE
ALLBLUE can propose denim fabrics in raw, sanforized, unsanforized, and one-wash directions depending on the project requirements.
We help brands consider shrinkage, hand feel, indigo depth, crocking risk, and the customer’s first wearing experience before deciding the final finishing level.
